Position : Senior Optical Design Engineer- Job # 053-14

Location : Westford, MA

Description:  Responsibility for supporting a variety of aesthetic and medical laser development projects as well as product transfer to manufacturing and sustaining activities on existing products.  Make primary technical contributions to instrument hardware designs and system development. Interact with internal and external users to gain complete understanding of product requirements and applications.

Key Results Area:

  • Troubleshoot hardware systems and develop test fixtures, diagnostic tools and procedures.
  • Optimize designs based on capability studies,  DFM principles and reliability,  maintenance, service cost, ROI and application evaluations.
  • Coordinate with manufacturing/process engineering representatives to develop controlled assembly and test processes and qualified component suppliers
  • Ability to design and specify optical materials, substrates and coatings for laser resonators and their delivery systems.
  • Ability to model and analyze optical designs in Zemax or Mathcad
  • Experience using spectrophotometric techniques to determine optical characteristics of materials and coatings
  • Ability to accurately gather radiometric measurements for a wide range of energies, pulse widths and wavelengths, including the use of power meters, photodetectors and oscilloscopes
  • Provide significant support for establishing standards and training for best practices in optical design and testing as well as support for instrument production and customer service personnel at new product launch.

  • Internal: Research Development, Documentation, Manufacturing, Customer Service and external vendors.

Qualifications :

  • BS in Physics or Optical Engineering or equivalent mechanical/optical design experience.
  • 7+ years experience in optical design of lasers and optical delivery systems
    • Experience in lasers, optics, laboratory instrumentation design, test and calibration
    • Experience in creating and conducting test plans.
    • Experience in system level instrument troubleshooting and repair a definite plus.
    • Extensive experience in design qualification and delivery to production.
  • Substantial experience in optical component selection, materials selection, coating and other fabrication techniques.
  • Competence with SolidWorks to realize designs in opto-mechanical assemblies
  • Able to present ideas and data to both small and large groups effectively and clearly
  • Independent thinker and doer needing minimum supervision – wide range of skills and collaboration required in this interdisciplinary position
  •  Must have excellent oral and written communications skills.
